Kill It Kid

Time to put the spotlight on a band that got my foot a tapping back in October 2009, which seems an awful long time ago now. Kill It Kid sauntered into town with a James Dean swagger, attired with a moniker from a Blind Willie McTell tune and a confidence that belied their youth. It was the night England were playing Belarus and mostly because it was a dead rubber of a game, it wasn't too difficult persuading Platterhorn to vacate his usual position, slobbed out in front of the T.V and catch this hotly tipped band instead of a watching a meaningless game of football.

It proved to be a wise choice as we got to hear some exhilarating songs played with gusto to the small but appreciative crowd. This young five piece from Bath have only been in existence since early 2008, yet they pack a punch with a sound that combines a traditional earthy bluesy rock with a twist of zingy indie folky lemony freshness. Kill It Kid have quickly established themselves as a dynamic live act and are being fast tracked up the greasy pole of music fervor (tipped via the likes of Q Magazine, Jonathan Ross and BBC 6 spotlights).

The real ace in the pack for KIK's delta blues stomp of a sound is the interplay of the singing between Chris Turpin's incredible lead vocals and Stephanie Ward's smoother vocals. The former's belting husky voice has often drawn comparisons with Antony (and the Johnsons) Hegarty, albeit with a rougher edge; imagine if he'd been up all night drinking Jack Daniels in a saloon bar. Steph's serene singing adds an extra dimension in that she is able to carry a tune flying solo or as a part of a duet. The rest of the band are Richard Jones on fiddle and backing vocals, Marc Jones on drums and percussion and Adam Timmins on bass and banjo/guitars make up a terrifically tight outfit.

Their progress was given an almighty leg up when they came to the attention of John Parish (sometime P J Harvey collaborator and Eels producer) who was asked to showcase some of his studio mixing abilities to some students at Bath Spa University. Kill It Kid were used as the band in residence and their obvious talents shone out during the hard graft of these sessions. Out of this experience came their debut E.P and less than a year later, the band were recording their first album for One Little Indian Records, in Seattle at the world famous Bear Creek Studio with Ryan Hadlock on producing duties (he has most notably worked with The Gossip, Foo Fighters, The Strokes and Regina Spektor)

The result of their hard endeavor was released in October 2009 as the debut album picked up warm reviews and I'm sure the plaudits will keep rolling in for the coming year as their star continues to rise. The highlights are the boisterous 'Burst Its Banks' which is a good time bluesy wailer of a tune with some fuzzed out slide guitar waltzing with a fearless fiddle and some harmonica tootling thrown in for good measure. It all comes together to create a dramatic hoedown of a track that kicks some serious posterior. The slower paced lament of 'Send Me An Angel Down' which has the guitar pickin' flavour of 'Wish You Were Here' era Pink Floyd underpinning the soaring vocals, shows the band functioning on a more low key level to equally dazzling effect. In fact, all the tunes hold their own and merit repeated listening and flow as a cohesive introduction to a group that have earned their spurs and are now ready to roll into the dusty saloon of our hearts.

Kill It Kid have shown exquisite taste by releasing a cover of the Low track 'Just Like Christmas' and have made the mp3 available here for free because you've all been so good this year, the generous scamps.

Baskery - Live In Texas

This is a montage of Baskery, performing a two hour set at the 'Luckenbach Festival' in Texas, U.S.A (more info here.. luckenbachtexas.com) Those three Swedish sisters look like they rocked the locals with their high tempo punky take on American country and roots music. What a cracking venue for a chilled out gig, taking in the vibes in the sun with a cool beer in your hand, all set against the backdrop of what looks like the local store from 'The Little House On The Prairie' It looks like a good time was had by all...

Many thanks to Matt Bynum for alerting me to his handiwork, it makes a pleasant change to see a nifty bit of film footage of a band, that's smoothly shot, high res and jolly smartly edited, rather than the usual shaky grainy mobile murky view of the backs of people's heads, which is unfortunately the norm on YouTube these days.

Baskery - Selected highlights - live at Luckenbach Texas on September 5 2009.

Lex Land - As Much As You Lead

The monthly tune changeover on my mp3 player changeover prompted this post, as this was one of the standout tracks from the constant loop of tunes demanding attention in my lugholes.

Lex Land is twenty two year old Californian who possesses a voice which has stickability, with a soulful languid resonance, that draws the listener in. When combined with a sure fire killer tune like the 'As Much As You Lead' tune, this becomes a deadly combination, which hooks you in.

Recommended, especially for those precious moments of the day, when we pause for breath from the twenty four seven madness of modern living, put our feet up, and take stock of surrounding everyday joys, like catching a few rays of sunshine whilst resting those weary bones.

The song is taken from her 2008 album Orange Days on Lemon Street, cannily named after her time, living on Lemon Street, in the town of Orange in Los Angeles composing this collection of songs. It is released via Intelligent Noise Records.

The song “As Much As You Lead,” has been featured on television shows such as “Private Practice,” “Brothers & Sisters,” and “One Tree Hill.” so she's obviously making waves in the right circles. I've noticed that these youth orientated dramas, usually imported by Channel 4 in the U.K and watched by Scratchy on a weekend morning, whilst recovering from one too many pints of 'Ole Grumblebelly' occasionally have cracking tunes to accompany the dramatic moments. The story lines wash over me but if they keep picking up on talent like Lex, I shall keep tuning in.

She also does a commendable version of the Joni Mitchell classic River from her Blue Album, which I had previously placed in the "cover versions shouldn't be attempted file, it's untouchable" so unfasten your seat belts, we're heading for a gentle landing!

Lex Land - As Much As You Lead - live at The Airliner in Los Angeles, CA on March 17, 2009

Baskery - Live Review

Date: Thursday 05th February 09 Location: Southampton U.K Venue: Joiners Arms

Scratchy's resident folk expert Morris Chancer had put out the word that this was a show worth checking out. There was a a good turnout at the legendary earthy venue, considering the midweek slot and the intermittent sleet and rain outside. Those who made the effort, were rewarded with a thrilling set from these Swedish trio of sisters known as Baskery, who put in a thigh slapping, high energy burst of music described as 'killbilly' 'banjo punk' and 'mud-country' However you describe it, the effect warmed the chilly bones of the enthralled audience.

Greta Bondesson manages to play six-stringed banjo, tambourine, kick, snare, harmonica and sing some vocals sometimes all at once, it's an impressive feat of musicianship for sure. Sunniva attacks her acoustic guitar with intensity whilst holding the primary vocal duties and Stella grapples with the Double bass with aplomb and completes the vocal duties. Together, they served their musical apprenticeship in in a family band, forming The Slaptones in 1999, with their father on drumming duties. They signed to EMI, released two albums, 'Simplify' in 2003 and 'Amplify' in 2004, as well as touring the U.S.A.

In 2006 they streamlined the band to the three piece and acquired the Baskery moniker and have released a debut album called 'Fall Among Thieves' on the independent Veranda label. The sessions were guided by the expertise of Lasse Mårtén (Lykke Li, Pink, Peter Bjorn & John etc) at Decibel Studios in Stockholm. The focus was to recreate the energy of the live performances by capturing the songs "live" in the studio in a couple of takes without the need for overdubs, if possible. Baskery are essentially a living breathing live band, who function best in front of a crowd, that appreciate charged up traditional music.

These girls are, in truth, a bit of a marketing team dream, with a photogenic image combining with a confident stage manner built from ten years of gigging under their belts and a lifetime of sibling interaction to draw from. Their sound conjures up an image of Throwing Muses doing Johnny Cash songs with a chirp towards the Dixie Chicks. The three way harmonies brought to my mind, the sirens in the river scene from the film Oh Brother Where Art Thou, with Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris performing a sultry 'Didn't Leave Nobody but The Baby' but cranked up to top speed in a perky punk style. They head out to the States for a short tour. Just as The Rolling Stones took their influences from traditional American blues, back in the early 1960's, then sent back a souped up version to it's homeland, Baskery are set to do the same, this time though it's the Swedish invasion...

Last night's result: Swedes 3 - Turnips 1derful night
(with apologies to The Sun headline writers and Graham Taylor)
