Tvärvägen - Pingvinvärmen

Tvärvägen is the brainchild of Henrik Ohberg, he is a one man band, making charming eclectic indie folk pop. He's also a part of Swedish indie folk band Ironville, so if he gets too lonesome, whilst inventing tunes in his cabin, he can hang out with those guys. I originally blogged a piece on his work here back in 2008, where I described his music as "a sound akin to 'An Old Curiosity Shop' being run by Noggin the Nog in a fading seaside town"

He has produced another lovely illustrated animated video for the song Pingvinvärmen and according to the blurb It's about a girl in a spacesuit, something that looks a little like a polar bear and some rolling creatures and a few birds. The title of the song translates into something along the lines of "The warmth of penguins" and I suggest you warm the cockles of your heart by checking this out.

Slow Club and First Aid Kit Live Review

Jojo and Patch, it's a name that evokes an image of a perplexing children's animation from Eastern Europe featuring a malevolent clown and his organ grinding monkey chum! (this sort of thing was a regular feature on the schedules of The B.B.C back in the Seventies and was responsible for warping the fragile young minds of many susceptible children of my generation) Jojo or Patch, for I never worked out which one was he, opened up the evening's entertainment with a gentle set of songs. He has a pleasing understated singing voice that recalls a Damien Rice or Bill Callahan from Smog.

It restored my faith in listening to sensitive singer songwriter types, after witnessing a horrific open mic night earlier in the year, when I was on holiday earlier in the summer. A procession of gauche young men attempted to sing along in a Jack Johnson crossed with Kurt Cobain style to their bedsit penned ditties to the groaning drinkers/audience. I swear, at one point, one aspiring James Blunt slunk off stage with tears in his eyes, mumbling apologies for being so bad, having cleared the pub of punters during his brief stint.

No such problems for our man though, who kept the sprinkling of punters onboard with a stirring strum through a handful of his compositions plus a cover version (Tom McCrae?) Patch or Jojo joined his compadre onstage for the final part of their set, it helped by having an extra guitarist to fill out the sound and hinted at the potential that could really bear fruit as they develop. All in all, it was good mojo for Jojo and worth keeping an eye (patch) on.

Next up were local indie folksters Wise Children, so far, they have a solitary eponymous self released four song E.P to their name, but they have recently signed up to Oxford based indie label Vacuous Pop.

They have recently evolved from being a moniker for singer/songwriter Robin Warren-Adamson's project, into a full blown band. The blurb quotes influences such as Nick Drake, Frightened Rabbit, Efterklang, Sigur Ros and Bon Iver, which tick all the right boxes to my mind.

A nice little interview of the band can be read here! and according to the BBC website featured here, they wanted to capture an earthy sound, so recorded one of the songs from the E.P in a Southampton cinema... well, I listened hard for the familiar background noises emanating from our local multiplex of constant effing and jeffing, mobile ring tones going off and occasional fights breaking out in the aisles, but all I could hear was beautifully crafted sweet songs, with just a hint of menace creeping out in the underbelly of the lyrics! The signature track for Wise Children is the heart melting 'I Found Her In The Bath' yes you guessed it, recorded in a bath!

The guys looked nervous as kittens as they coughed up some fur balls of folk that have a lovely indie texture. The photogenic foursome combine to produce electro acoustic guitar heavy harmonic folk rock and have within their ranks, a front man with enough charisma about him, to give the guys something very promising to build upon. It transpired that this was their first gig in their current line up, which explained, the slightly awkward pauses for tuning etc. Give 'em six months to iron out the rough edges and Wise Children could be a very promising proposition.

The venue filled out and expectations grew considerably with the arrival of First Aid Kit fresh from a End of the Road festival performance and a precursor to a short tour of the U.K with Fanfarlo. Regular Scratchy readers will be aware of our appreciation in previous postings of the musical talents of these two Swedish sisters, Klara and Johanna Soderberg and so there was much anticipation to hear the duo in action. I think that this was the first exposure to First Aid Kit for the majority of the audience, but I got the distinct impression that most of them perked up very quickly and were well on the way to being converted by the final song.

As far as I remember, the set list included (In The Morning) My Daddio?, Our Own Pretty Ways, Your Not Coming Home Tonight, Jagadamba You Might, Tangerine, Tiger Mountain Peasant Song, The Universal Soldier and finishing with I'm In Love With The King (Disclaimer I must remember to make a more accurate record of these things at the time and not a week later so accuracy cannot be guaranteed)

The extended touring schedule has really paid dividends as the girls put in a polished performance exuding confidence in their material and their ability to deliver it with panache. Sometimes, one has to remind yourself that these siblings are still in the early stages of their career as their voices combine so effectively and they will in time, mature in their singing and songwriting skills. It's exciting to think that hopefully there's so much more to come, a musical Médecins Sans Frontières for your ears!

You know, when it comes to "getting it" with certain bands you sometimes just have to go out and see a them do their thang in the right setting, then it all clicks into place. Slow Club are one of these bands, with a reputation has been steadily growing and have been bubbling up to the boil on the blogosphere cooker for awhile now, yet investigations in the Scratchy kitchen have been rather tardy up to now, so this was a great opportunity to see what the fuss was about.

Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor are a compelling indie double act, they go together like strawberries and cream or Morecambe and Wise. The in-between song banter might be reminiscent of Jack and Vera Duckworth raiding the cocktail cabinet and getting sloshed on "a long slow comfortable folk up against the wall" at times, but make no mistake, this duo are serious about making punchy frantic organic indie pop songs and when Rebecca is beating the hell out of her drums, as Charles is thrashing out those guitar riffs, the image of a folk tinged White Stripes is absorbing and exhilarating to witness.

First Aid Kit - Summer Sessions Covers

The immensely talented Swedish sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg, who go under the moniker of First Aid Kit, are doing a series of cover versions this summer and have been inviting suggestions, via their website for appropriate songs to tackle. The teenage popstrels enchanted us last year with a delightful cover of Fleet Foxes Tiger Mountain Peasant Song and they have a mini album out on Rabid Records called 'Drunken Trees' So far, they have covered Walk The Line by Johnny Cash and Buffy Sainte Marie's Universal Soldier, if you have any inspired suggestion for their next effort, contact them via their website as shown below.

First Aid Kit - Simple Man - The original version was written and performed by Graham Nash from his 1971 solo album 'Songs For Beginners' which was released as the B side of the single 'Chicago' The song featured Rita Coolidge on backing vocals and apparently was penned on the afternoon of the Nash's break up with his then girlfriend Joni Mitchell.

Twiggy Frostbite

As I stumbled across the charming video for the track 'Heroes' by Swedish five piece Twiggy Frostbite, I was immediately seduced by the cute animation and the bitter sweet nature of the story line. It's a real quivering lip heart breaker and guaranteed to move even the most hard bitten cynical music blogger to tears. The music is beautiful and reminds me of that seminal track by Stina Nordenstam, Little Star, with it's delicate vocals and sweet but sad delivery.

Twiggy Frostbite are from Gävle have been together since 2006 and contain members of blogland darlings The Deer Tracks along with death metal punksters Grizzly Twister! The current line up is Elin Lindfors on vocals, Anna Karin Berglund on keyboard, Emma Sjöberg on bass duties David Kramer on drums Joel Thedéen on guitar and input from Joakim Westlund on guitar.

According to the promo blurb they're inspired by the smell, the acoustics and everything to do with The London Underground. Presumably, they romantically mean, the eerie lights zipping through tunnels and spooky echoes bouncing off chambers rather than smelly armpits in the rush hour, sick stained seats and the caterwaul of out of tune buskers, which will be the more familiar images conjured up by the majority of average London commuters.

Right here comes the factual bits: The debut album is called Through Fire and was released via Despotz Records in Sweden on February 18th 2009 It's currently scheduled for a U.K release on 1st June 2009.

Ironville - Roses

Ironville are a seven piece Swedish band featuring Henrik Öhberg, who has crossed our radar before, via the Swedish micro record label Knoppar. Henrik has many of his talented sticky fingers in various musical pies with a solo project, that goes under the banner of Tvärvägen, as well as being half of a psychedelic hip hop duo called Amok.

Ironville, who formed in 2004, have an album called 'Welcome to Ironville' in the ironpipeline, which was recorded in the studio of Konie. They have just released a charming video to the song Roses (produced by Ironville and Markus Krunegård) that will beguile you with it's catchy and bouncy beat.

Roses announces it's arrival in in jaunty manner right from the violin intro, then lunges into an indie parlour tune that guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The vocal performance teeters on the edge of being strident, but Emelie Bååth's singing is actually rather lovely, like a homespun jumper that needs a bit of wearing in to bring out the furry soft patches and then soon becomes a wardrobe favourite.

The accompanying video is a visual prescription to lift the spirits. The illustrations and animation are by the boy wonder Henrik, who has animated snorkeling cats, bubble wrapped crabs and brassy beaked birds in a sweet naive style, what more could you ask for!

Ironville have a philosophy in that their band should have lots of lead singers and as many instruments on stage as possible. Well, it seems to be working and here's hoping their song writing continues to keep coming up roses...

Headlights - Twelve Grooves Of Christmas Part 2

I stumbled into the path of the feel good indie trio sound of Headlights from Champain, Illinois back in August and was immediately entranced by their jingly jangly jauntiness. It gave me a full beam of a smile and as friends here at Scratchy Towers will testify, that's quite an achievement, when I'm in full 'Oscar The Grouch' mode.

The album Some Racing, Some Stopping was released back in March this year and was chock full of sparkling goodness, they have also just released a compilation of remixed tunes, cleverly entitled Remixes, out on Polyvinyl Records and can be bought here They're building up a good reputation as a live band as well and so will surely dazzle plenty more people in the coming year.

Headlights

If you are in need a serious injection of sunny summer pop loveliness, Headlights are your band. They are an indie threesome from Champaign, Illinois, who deliver a plethora of pastoral pop, that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and mellow your mood. It's like lying in a meadow, watching the clouds drift by and listening to the crows make the most of the farmer harvesting the crops in the distance. This is a corn doll not corn ball experience.

The group are principally made up of Erin Fein on vocals and keyboards, Tristan Wraight on vocals, guitar, plus bass and Brett Sanderson on drums. They formed in 2004 from the remnants of two bands Maserati and Absinthe Blind. They released an E.P 'The Enemies' which was picked up by the Polyvinyl label and re-released in 2005. A debut album 'Kill Them With Kindness' followed in 2006 and they performed a gruelling schedule of 300 gigs up until Spring 2007 when the trio retreated to the nest, for some well deserved R&R.

The nest was an old two-story farmhouse near Champaign from where Headlights began crafting their next full length album, 'Some Racing, Some Stopping' Listening to tracks hatched from this collection, the influence of their semi-rural surroundings is obvious, as the music has a kick back, drink some iced tea and feel the breeze in your hair, quality about it.

The band are back on tour, augmented by Nick Sanborn and John Owen, to promote the new album worldwide, throughout the rest of 2008. They bring a reputation for putting on a quality show and are chirpier than a field of crickets, so be prepared to be dazzled by Headlights, my music loving bunnies, hop to the beat and scamper to the sounds of summer.

Sparky's Magic Piano

Sparky's Magic Piano is a record, based on the exploits of a little boy with an over active imagination. This is the second in a series of children’s audio stories featuring Sparky, an original character created for Capitol Records in 1947. The album shown is a double header with ‘Sparky and the Talking Train’ on the flip side, my copy was pressed in 1961. Henry Blair portrayed Sparky, throughout most of the series, Ray Turner carried out piano duties, the music was credited to Billy May and narration of the story on is by Verne Smith.

The story concerns a little boy who has got an over active imagination, that takes him off into a dream world, where he can talk to his piano. Sparky initially, doesn’t like taking his piano lessons, but when he starts to communicate with his special piano, he is suddenly able to play brilliantly, to the amazement of his mother and piano teacher. A concert tour follows and Sparky turns into a star, but the adulation goes to his head. The piano has had enough of this behaviour and decides to take him down a peg or two. It refuses to co-operate during a big performance, at Carnegie Hall, leading to onstage disaster and humiliation for the young lad. Sparky is brought back down to earth and also back to reality with a bump, but not before he vows to practice properly and gain achievement on merit this time.

On the flip side, is 'Sparky and the Magic Train' In this story, Sparky hears the voice of a steam train that he’s on, who warns him of impending disaster further up the track. No one believes him at first of course, and why should they, he’s a serial fibber, however he eventually persuades the driver to stop the train in the nick of time and all ends well.

The kid's obviously prone to telling a few whoppers and needs something to calm him down. To be frank, Sparky's a bit of a pain, with his wholesome as apple pie demeanour, but you can’t deny the timeless quality of the tales, which have a lasting appeal for children. Luckily, I grew up on stuff like ‘The Faraway Tree’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ they were proper left field fables to engage and freak out an overly imaginative youngster and reading them never did me any harm, let me tell you.

Sparky has also appeared in comic books as a side kick to Capitol’s other famous creation, Bozo The Clown.

One of the many pleasures of trawling for new music, is having a happy little accident and stumbling across an interesting band, that’s previously been off my radar. This is the case with Sparky’s Magic Piano, a duo from London, whose website popped up, whilst doing some perfunctory research for the above item.

Marion Turnbull and Oliver Bartlett create a D.I.Y indie-electro groove thang with glockenspiels, recorders and synthesisers thrown into the mix. The results are simple and charming pop tunes that give a warm glow, like toasting marshmallows by the open fire on a Sunday, waiting for ‘The Muppet Show’ to come on. Marion’s very English clipped vocals remind me of Sarah Nixey's on Luke Haines’ Black Box Recorder project, with a sprinkling of Saint Etienne's approach to music making, cast into the mix. They self released a debut album in 2007, called ‘Feel The Beat And Do It Anyway!’ on Melody Factory label. The single ‘Like Falling In Love’ is particularly perky and as they develop, I'm sure extra sparks will create some more spell binding magical songs, in the near future.

The School

The school holidays are nearly upon us and that can only mean one thing, an upsurge in those traditional cherubic activities during those blissful, homework free, six weeks; making dens, games of hide and seek, listening out for the chimes of the ice cream van, hanging out on street corners getting mullered on alcopops, watching the burnt out cars light up the sky at sundown and shanking each other for "disrespecting ma bro's"

So, with this in mind and to jolly up the mood again, I bring to your attention the Cardiff based six piece The School whose jingly-jangly Spectorish pop will put a smile on your face and erect a deckchair on the promenade beside your earside. The 'Let It Slip' E.P has a couple of sizzlers with the title track and 'I don't believe in Love' wafting over the patio all breathy, hand clappy and polka dotty. The two other tracks fall between the griddle and into the fire somewhat, but are still edible once you brush off the charcoally bits. 'Let It Slip' follows on from the first single 'All I Want To Do' which has a holding hands in the park vibe to it, though disconcertingly reminded me of Anita Dobson's 'Anyone Can Fall In Love' abomination at one point, but let's not hold that against it...

The School is reading the 'Jackie' problem page during lunch break, whilst munching on a bag full of fizz bombs and space dust, under the shady tree!

Thos Henley

'Summer On The Thames' is a charming slice of rural pop loveliness, soon be released through Tapeclub Records, from up and coming young minstrel Thos Henley. He is a former member of Rival Joustas, hails from Winchester and is a contemporary of that other folky buccaneer Johnny Flynn, whose just released 'A Larum' album has been gaining plenty of favourable national press. Henley's vocals float on a breeze of traditional instruments such as ukuleles, accordions and glockenspiels on songs steered in the right direction by a strong pop rudder. The alt folk vibe has echoes of Sufjan Stevens' output and also reminds me of The Incredible String Band's gentler moments. This boat is on an introspective current but artfully avoids the whimsical shallows and so this troupe are set course for a favourable journey.

Raymond & Maria

Raymond and Maria are a six piece from Sweden, who are the latest in a seemingly endless seem of top quality upbeat indie pop combos from that neck of the woods. They have actually have been going since 2002 and have had considerable success in their native charts with their own particular brand of stripped down acoustic sunny tunes which veer just on the right side of twee. Sisters, Maria and Camilla, augment this with sumptuous singing and sweet harmonies. There is a strong anti-commercial d.i.y ethic, as seen in their homemade videos and of course they ooze style just like those cool kids in the sixth form college common room who seemed to have sauntered straight out of an obscure French New Wave movie. Apparently, the band moniker comes from a swinger's club in Stockholm, if that's so, well I'll be throwing my car keys onto the coffee table and cross my fingers that I pick up some more 'Raymond and Maria' action rather than any 'Terry and June' tunes.

Saint Etienne and Sylvie Vartan

This iconic beauty, who was nestling amongst the 7 inchers, jumped out at me and demanded that I invest 20p for such a chic cover. Sylvie Vartan is a legend in France, where she became a singing and dancing sensation in the genre now known as the yé-yé girls (of whom Françoise Hardy is probably the best known in the U.K) This Bulgarian born chanteuse came to prominence in the early sixties with her catchy pop sound and her rise in the affections of French pop fans was cemented when she married Johnny Hallyday. She has retained a large fan base is still recording albums and is performing a tour right now so hop on that plane/euro star pronto if you want to catch her live.

The Sylvie moniker reminded me of sophisticated indie-pop crafters Saint Etienne, who crafted many a slab of perfect pop loveliness, throughout the nineties/noughties. One of my favourites was called Sylvie, were they inspired by the original yé-yé queen for the title? I like to think so, even though the lyrics were all about sibling rivalry as the older sister planned to cut down to size, her younger sister, who had become too big for her boots by cutting into the unnamed sister's glamour territory! all set to Sarah Cracknell's sumptuous singing: as good as watching Michel Platini in full flow in 1980/1.

Those Dancing Days

On my monthly rummage through the flotsam and jetsam of the promos at the local record fair, I chanced upon these sweet sounding tunes from Stockholm in Sweden. This all girl group are creating classic frothy pop anchored by a mighty Hammond organ topped off with Linnea Jonsson's astonishingly beguiling vocals. The single Hitten/Tasty Boy is released in the U.K 28.01.08 via Wichita followed soon after by the debut album. I can't wait and one to watch in 2008
